I haven't a clue why it was part of the 'Celtic Connections' festival, but tonight's gig by Robyn Hitchcock and the Venus 3 (or Guinness 3 as they called themselves) : Scott McCaughey, Bill Rieflin, and Peter Buck (out of that R.E.M. mob)...was sheer psychedelic excellence.
Hitchcock is as mad as a spotty zebra wearing a sombrero, but the music was astounding, (highlights being 'GIVE IT TO THE SOFT BOYS' and covers of The Beatles' 'SHE SAID', and Syd Barrett's 'SEE EMILY PLAY')...No sign of Michael Stipe and Mick Mills (they appeared with the band in Oxford last week), but I was more than happy with a very lively set and I got some great pics...
