They are THE SENSATIONAL ALEX HARVEY BAND... and at The Wickerman Festival, they were, indeed, SENSATIONAL ! There were always going to be folk who said that you couldn't have THE SENSATIONAL BAND without Alex Harvey (who died in 1982)...but here were the original band members, along with new frontman Max Maxwell, and THEY ROCKED !!!
It was a joy to watch the Wickerman crowd at the Woodward Stage grow and grow due to the sheer brilliance of this band, and genuinely warm to them, and their new singer...
Old favourites, such as Framed, Action Strasse and Faith Healer were belted out, with Zal Cleminson (in make-up and looking fighting fit), on guitar, and Chris Glen (a dead ringer for TV's Tom Urie) on bass clearly taking great pleasure from the crowd's wild applause...
...Zal in particular deserves praise for his solos. The man is a guitar god who should be studied by today's spotty teenagers (and there were more than a few in the crowd, stunned at the guy's talent, dexterity and stage presence)
Ted Mckenna on drums even took a solo, while his cousin Hugh provided impeccable keyboard playing...
This was a band that looked far removed from the same guys who played a couple of gigs as The Party Boys a few years back. The crowd sang along to Gang Bang and Boston Tea Party, and I felt that they should have been headlining the festival.
Max Maxwell, his confidence having grown immensely since the last time I saw him perform, won over the cynics, and his "I never done nothin' " appeals during Framed were well received, as were his onstage 'antics'...when he joined Zal and Chris for the 'line-up' dance section of Delilah, I was thrilled, and the crowd loved it...
