What puts The Sulphur Children ahead of most of their contemporaries is a combination of sheer musical talent with brilliantly crafted songs. Guitarist Drew, and Miranda on Bass, achieve vocal and instrumental harmonies which most bands would kill for, and with the accompaniment of John on Bodhran, and Freya on the fiddle, The Sulphur Children can shift gear from heart-breaking tenderness to foot-stomping punky funkyness.
Comparisons are difficult (and perhaps redundant) when describing The Sulphur Children. It is clear that they acknowledge traditional roots, but they add an infectious, modern edge to the sound, with songs that are just damn well-written and played!
In the pre-download era 'Cold Heart' would have been a hit single.
It has a fantastic bass-line, a 'singalong' chorus and some lovely fiddle playing. To the band's credit, this song has become a real 'crowd-pleaser' when played at gigs. 'The Only Way Is Out' is a fragile, delicate, pretty song, which reminds me of early, psychedelic-era Fairport, (before they went all 'Hey Nonny' !), and 'Universal' admirably achieves the 'modern urban folksong' title, with an angst-ridden tenderness and a sense of despair at the state of the world today, that the James Blunts and David Grays out there would struggle to match.
